The Provencal countryside north of Avignon boasts some of France's
most magnificent scenery. Our first day of biking takes us along quiet
roads to the turreted medieval duchy of Uzes. Then we're off to the
Ardeche Gorges, heading up a road sometimes carved right through the
limestone cliff, followed by 15 miles along the top edge of this natural
wonder.
After a night in an ancient walled town overlooking the river,
we'll visit Vaison-la-Romaine, taking a moonlit stroll to its ruined
hilltop castle. Finally, stop for a wine-tasting in celebrated Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
Highlights:
- Roam Avignon, an ancient city of stone ramparts and belltowers,
once home to the Popes.
- Picnic at the Pont du Gard, the 2000-year-old Roman aqueduct, one
of the 7 surviving wonders of the ancient world.
- Take a midnight skinny-dip under the stars, floating below the massive
rock arch known as the Pont d'Arc.
- Bike along the rim of the Ardeche Gorges, as kayakers battle the
foaming rapids a thousand feet below.
- Tour the world's best-preserved Roman amphitheater in Orange.
- Sample the world-known wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
- At the end of each day's travel, savor a well-earned three-hour
gourmet dinner.
